About Sutherland Guest House

A four-bedroom guest house with countryside charm and atmosphere. Perfect accommodation for up to 10 people. Sutherland is nestled in the Roggeveld Mountains. They say we are the coldest town in South Africa, but at Sutherland Guest House we will warm-heartedly welcome you.

This is a typical Karoo-style house built with stone and sporting a big verandah and thick walls. The house is suitable for two to 10 people and may be hired to a group of people who would like to do self-catering. We can also spoil you with a lovely farm-style breakfast. The rooms have their own bathrooms and the beds have electric blankets for those chilly winter nights. Each room has coffee and tea facilities. In the big lounge and dining room you can relax in front of a warm fire and forget about all your troubles.

Sutherland is known for the Southern Africa Large Telescope at the observatory, a mere 15 km from town. You can do a day or night tour at the observatory, but bookings are essential. The museum, the birthplace of the Afrikaans writers and poets, NP van Wyk Louw and his brother, EG Louw is also worth a visit. The Dutch Reform Church, with its beautiful organ and history of the Anglo Boer War is a must see. Our fauna and flora, the place of the riverine rabbit, rare butterflies, sutherlandia and many more flowers in spring will amaze you.

We visited Sutherland Guest House for one night as a stopover on our way back to Johannesburg from the coast, but we also wanted to combine it with a visit to SALT. The experience was amazing and our accommodation was clean and comfortable. We loved the real Karoo feel of the house and surrounds. Bertie was very welcoming and helpful.

The Guest House appeared more pleasant on your site than in reality. Our rooms were dark and not serviced daily. The "self-catering" facilities are poor and we ended up going out to eat for all our meals. We had to request a new gas bottle which we then had to change ourselves. All the beds did have electric blankets though and there is a nice braai area outside.

Sutherland Guest House is just what you need in a farm town like Sutherland. Very cosy and beautiful! Everything you need is available in the guesthouse. There is enough extra blankets and the electric blankets is also a bonus. It is clean and you feel at home. The best part is the fireplace! Especially in the winter. We loved our stay and I will recommend Sutherland Guest House to anyone. Ester Jordaan is also very friendly and helpful. We were very disappointed that we just stayed 2 days in Sutherland.

As advertised, we got what we booked, no surprises here, as a group of 6 adults and 3 children, we thoroughly enjoyed our self catering stay! Rooms were found to be in a neat and tidy condition with en-suites facility clean as well. Every bed is fitted with an electric blanket and each room has its own heater, super plus in winter! We had full use of both well equipped kitchens. While looking for accommodation, we found Sutherland Guest house to be one of the few establishments where all rooms have en-suites facilities, a big plus when having a large group including children!
