The Cederberg Wilderness Area is a magical and mysterious place. It is an area of immense physical beauty that merits its inclusion as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the Cape Floristic Region.

Haunting rock paintings leave the spiritual and social legacy of the Bushmen, nomadic hunter-gatherers who lived here thousands of years ago until recently. Cape leopard quietly pad the craggy landscape. Rare Snow Proteas bloom on the highest peaks and the near-extinct Clanwilliam Cedar Trees cling vicariously to remote slopes.

Vast and secluded, this stunning mountain reserve beckons nature lovers and adventure seekers with numerous hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking and swimming opportunities. If you’re not into extreme hiking or looking for a hike with a difference, try one of the fully inclusive Cape Heritage Route hiking trails. These slackpacking routes are a community initiative and guided by locals who share their rich knowledge of the Cederberg. If you’re on a quick visit, don’t miss viewing the accessible spectacular rock paintings and formations at Stadsaal.

During springtime the countryside around Clanwilliam and Wupperthal bursts into bloom, becoming places of pilgrimage for locals and tourists alike. The Clanwilliam Flower Festival is worthwhile, and so is a visit to the pretty Ramskop Wildflower Garden.
