The town of Loeriesfontein is situated in the Hantam region, 80 kilometres from Calvinia. Other nearby towns include Nieuwoudtville (65km) and Brandvlei (128km).

It is situated in a basin and surrounded by the beautiful mountain ranges of the Northern Cape. Loeriesfontein are part of the Namaqualand, known the world over for its proliferation of wild flowers during the South African spring time.

People flock from all corners of the globe to experience the natural loveliness of about 4 000 different flower species. The town plays an important role in the sheep farming and salt mining industries of South Africa.

Loeriesfontein is also the proud home of one of the world’s only two windmill museums. This is called the Fred Turner Museum, and it showcases 27 assembled windpumps. The Quiver Tree Forest near Loeriesfontein is one of the largest of its kinds in the world.

The friendluness and cleanliness of the place

Outside of flower season I would say the main attraction of Loeriesfontein is the Fred Turner Windmill Museum. This outdoor display of the steel structures of varying dimensions among kokerbooms is like a surreal sculpture garden. It's a short walk from the Windpomp Gastehuis, a collection of self-contained rooms, rather like a motel. Carl meets you at the gate and hands over the keys with a remote so that you can operate the sliding gate as you come and go. For dinner and a drink, you'll want to walk to the Boesmanland Pub & Grill, which serves huge portions and thick juicy steaks (or mushroo...

My wife used to live here 39 years ago. Was good to see Loeriesfontein. Windpomp gastehuis is really a lovely place with all the facilities you could want for in your room. Regrettably only self catering.
